October 24th, was World Polio Day, a day when global health experts & partners share progress on the road to polio eradication from the work of Rotary Clubs around the world.
Pieter Koeleman, with the Rotary Club of Campbell River, says that in 1988 when Rotary began working to eradicate Polio, there were 120 countries where the virus was endemic, and 350 thousand people were infected annually.
Presently, there are only two countries, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, where the disease exists, and only 27 cases of people with the Polio virus.
The Rotary Club of Campbell River is presenting their Pumpkins for Polio Beer & Burger fundraiser tonight, at the Riptide Marine Pub. It starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased from the Riptide or Coho Books.
Proceeds from this evening will benefit the Rotary Club of Campbell River for PolioPlus and all funds raised will be double matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
