School District 72 has unveiled its first accessibility plan.
Created by the newly formed accessibility committee, the three-year plan outlines how the district will begin to ensure that facilities, programming, and processes are welcoming and accessible to everyone in the community.
The accessibility plan, which is available on the district's website, underscores the district’s commitment to creating an environment that accommodates all individuals.
The accessibility committee was formed at the end of last school year and is made up of nine members who either personally live with or support others with various impairments and represent a cross section of positions across the district, from vice-principals to bus drivers.
A key component informing the committee’s work is the feedback mechanism.
People can submit concerns via an online form or a dedicated email address, ensuring that every voice is heard and considered in the district’s ongoing efforts to improve accessibility.
The plan prioritizes identifying and eliminating various barriers within the school district, from physical and environmental obstacles to attitudinal barriers that affect the experiences of students, parents/caregivers, or staff with disabilities.
Into next school year, an audit team will assess every site within the district to ensure the fundamental physical accessibility of district facilities.
