School District 72 is highlighting a new partnership between the BC Ministry of Infrastructure and Ministry of Education and Child Care.

At the latest board meeting, Chair Kat Eddy emphasized the collaboration is expected to streamline and enhance how the government manages public sector infrastructure projects, an essential step in ensuring that schools and community spaces remain vibrant and well-equipped to serve the needs of children.

In Campbell River, the partnership holds particular promise for SD72, specifically Cedar Elementary School and the Cedar Annex.

The Cedar property is home to not only Cedar Elementary and its recently opened before-and-after-school daycare sites but also the community services provided by the Laichwiltach Family Life Society.

However, the Cedar Annex building sustained significant fire damage last summer, rendering the space unusable for the Society’s programming.

Eddy underscored the importance of rebuilding and restoring the spaces, not only for education but for the broader well-being of the community.

She said the collaboration between the Ministries of Infrastructure and Education and Child Care would help accelerate the rebuilding process, allowing the district to restore and expand these essential spaces to meet the growing needs of students and local organizations.

Eddy also took a moment to celebrate the launch of the groundbreaking Laichwiltach Health Center.

Eddy said the new facility represents a major step forward in addressing healthcare service gaps, particularly for Indigenous citizens in the region.

A testament to the power of collaboration between governments, Indigenous communities, and healthcare providers, Eddy said the center will offer critical services that improve access to healthcare, promote wellness, and address longstanding health disparities.

The Health Centre, on Ironwood Street, opened its doors last week.
