School District 72 has released more details as it looks to improve math numbers.
Superintendent Jeff Manning touched on the topic at the last board meeting.
To support its 2024-2028 strategic plan and help students achieve grade-level proficiency in numeracy, the district has formed a numeracy framework committee.
It has been tasked to create a cohesive numeracy framework to guide instruction across SD72.
The committee includes educators from various schools and roles, who will bring diverse perspectives to the table, as well as directors, principals, teachers and support teachers, a school psychologist, and Indigenous teacher coordinator.
A review of student achievement data indicates a district-wide plan may support improved results and the District says teachers across Campbell River have expressed support for the effort, recognizing the benefits of a unified approach to math instruction.
The committee's goal is to develop a K-9 numeracy framework during this school year, with a staggered and supported roll-out to teachers the next school year.
The framework will include recommended assessments and district screeners to identify areas where students need extra help and intervention, and to point teachers to instructional support and guidance.
The District says just like its literacy framework, the numeracy framework will be developed by Campbell River educators and tailored to the district’s needs.
