The second annual Cumberland Repair Café is happening next month, and organizers are looking for volunteers who like to tinker.
Cumberland Community Schools Society (CCSS) is hosting a Repair Café at Cumberland Community School on Saturday, April 27th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event provides an alternative for household items destined for the landfill to be repaired and reused for free.
Kate Ashton, Program Coordinator for CCSS, says they’re once again partnering with Comox Strathcona Waste Management to help in their goal of having biannual Repair Cafés in the Comox Valley.
Ashton says that last year, over 50 items were repaired at the event, and they hope to double that this year.
Lindsay Eason and Tina Willard-Stepan, with Comox Strathcona Waste Management, say the initiative tackles waste diversion through public education.
Willard-Stepan says there is a growing awareness of Repair Cafés in the Comox Valley, noting Lake Trail Community Education Society held their second Repair Café this fall and doubled the number of repaired items compared to the year before.
The Cumberland Repair Café is currently looking for volunteers who have expertise in fixing items such as jewelry, small appliances, toys, or electronics.
