Deconstruction of the derelict buildings in Coal Creek Historic Park in Comox, south of Japanese Townsite, will begin today.

The project includes the installation of a temporary creek crossing and the complete deconstruction and disposal of several out buildings and the former Souther residence.

Once complete the temporary crossing structure will be removed, the derelict bridge will be dismantled, and the creek banks will be restored to a more natural state.

Parks staff will monitor the site over the coming years with the intention of promoting passive and active restoration of native species to the disturbed areas.

Public access to the Japanese Townsite parking lot will be maintained throughout the project, but patrons of the park should be aware that there will be increased machine activity and traffic in the immediate vicinity.

Please use caution while in the area and respect all project signage and fencing.
