The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) has received a grant to install tsunami warning sirens, enhance radio communication capacity, provide backup power, and procure mobile EOC kits.
The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) has received a grant to install tsunami warning sirens, enhance radio communication capacity, provide backup power, and procure mobile EOC kits.
The grant comes through the 2022 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Emergency Operation Centre (EOC).
SRD Chair Brad Unger says the grant was made possible through partnership between the SRD, five municipalities and three First Nations.
Blair says they came up with a proposal that best-met the needs of all communities involved. The primary component of this grant application will be the installation of 5 tsunami warning sirens. Shaun Koopman is the Protective Services Coordinator with SRD.
He says the grant complements the achievements of the district's recent tsunami mapping initiative and helps realize a consistent commitment to enhancing the safety of west coast communities.
Fair Harbour and the Gold River estuary areas will each receive their first tsunami siren.
Other communities will get enhancements to their existing systems. The pieces of the project, include installing various antennas and Radio Over Internet Protocol to enhance communications between communities.
