The Conservative Caucus of BC has released a statement from North Island MLA Anna Kindy concerning a letter of support for a controversial federal election candidate, written on her official B.C. Legislature letterhead.
Kindy issued the letter of support for North Island-Powell River Federal Conservative Candidate Aaron Gunn on Saturday.
It stated that the accusations against Gunn of residential school denialism have been “particularly egregious,” and included the names of other local politicians who support Gunn, such as Campbell River Mayor Kermit Dahl, three Campbell River Councillors, and Courtenay-Comox MLA Brennan Day.
They said Gunn’s character and record were being misrepresented in a “troubling smear campaign.”
MLAs are expected to avoid using official letterhead for partisan activities outside the scope of their responsibilities.
Kindy posted a short statement on X last night, through the BC Conservative Caucus, noting the letter went out on her legislature letterhead regarding “a local federal election candidate,” not naming Gunn directly.
Calling it a mistake that won’t happen again, Kindy said she takes full responsibility.
Another letter, containing the names of nearly 30 local leaders, including Homalco First Nation Chief Darren Blaney, Courtenay Mayor Bob Well, area Regional Directors, Cumberland Mayor Vickey Brown, and others, calls for the Conservative Party to drop its support of Gunn as the candidate.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilivre said at a campaign stop on the weekend that Gunn has his support.
