The Strathcona Regional District has been given the go-ahead to establish a regional housing service, with the intent to consider several housing related challenges in the region.
The District used an Alternative Approval Process (AAP) to determine elector support on the project. It allows the SRD to borrow up to $10 million to move things along.
With electoral approval, the Regional District will now be able to start considering a number of service provision options moving forward.
Board Chair Mark Baker says the service will allow the SRD to address some of the pressing issues related to housing in the region including, among other things, the lack of workforce housing, and housing to meet the needs of seniors.
Over the next few months, the SRD will determine whether there are projects that require immediate attention and whether the SRD should be providing public funding to address potential solutions.
