The Strathcona Regional District is holding a pair of public forums Monday as it develops a Poverty Reduction Plan.
It’s meant to outline goals and actions designed to decrease the impact of poverty within the community.
The plan is being developed in partnership with the City of Campbell River and the Campbell River and District Coalition to End Homelessness, along with other government agencies and organizations.
They’ll be meeting at the Campbell River Community Centre from 1pm to 3pm, and at the Maritime Heritage Centre from 5pm to 7pm.
There are also sessions planned for other days this week.
The purpose of the poverty reduction plan is to create a clear path forward to improve living conditions and increase the opportunities available to those living in poverty.
The plan will provide in depth research, analysis, and recommendations related to eight priority action areas: Housing / Families, children, and youth / Education and training / Employment / Income support / Social support / Discrimination and stigma / Safe, affordable, transportation.
The SRD has received $147,700 from the Union of B.C. Municipalities Poverty Reduction Planning and Action Program to move things along for the region.
There’s also some money from the Province.
The District says engagement with municipalities, First Nations, community organizations, service providers, and people with lived and living experience and the larger community will be an important part of the creation of the Poverty Reduction Plan.
Additional community engagement opportunities will be provided in the near future.
