The emergency order put in place on Saturday has had the desired effect and is being lifted today.
Bowinn Ma, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, said yesterday the emergency order put in place on Saturday has had the desired effect and is being lifted today.
Thousands of hotel rooms were made available for people forced from their homes, as well as the many firefighters and emergency crews battling the blazes. She says working with local governments and First Nations, the province will continue to place people in the accommodations that are now available. So, travel restrictions for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodation are being lifted for most of the southern Interior, with the exception of West Kelowna. The order will be lifted for Kelowna, Kamloops, Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton and Vernon starting today. Non-essential travel to West Kelowna continues to be prohibited for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodation, including hotels, motels, inns, b&bs, hostels, RV parks, and campgrounds, to ensure accommodation is available for those who may need it. Environment Canada has issued a number of weather alerts for the interior, as cooler, wetter weather makes its way in. The Shuswap (SHOO'-swap) region has a good chance of showers later today and temps under 20 - but there is also the potential for thunderstorms, along with lightning, and gusty winds.
