The Town of Comox has adopted its first Accessibility Assessment and Action Plan, demonstrating what the Town calls a commitment to creating an inclusive, barrier-free community.

The plan was approved at a Council meeting last week, making Comox the first of the four local governments in the Valley to officially endorse a plan aligned with the Accessible BC Act.

The plan was developed based on the principles of the Comox Valley Local Government Accessibility Framework, which the Town says reflects shared priorities such as inclusion, diversity, equity, and universal design.

It addresses barriers in multiple forms—physical, technological, attitudinal, sensory, and systemic—striving to make services, infrastructure, and programs accessible to all residents.

In a release, the Town explains some of the more notable initiatives that will be undertaken by the plan include integrating age-friendly community planning into the current update of the Town’s Official Community Plan, the continuation of subsidizing recreation programs like LEAP (Leisure for Everyone Accessibility Program), and improving accessibility in public spaces (e.g. Kye Bay Park).

“The adoption of this plan is an important step forward for Comox,” said Comox Mayor, Nicole Minions.

“It aligns with our Strategic Plan and legislative requirements, and we look forward to implementing meaningful improvements that will enhance accessibility throughout our community. We’re listening to our residents on an ongoing basis and want to work together to reduce barriers.”

The three-year action plan outlines prioritized recommendations and focuses on regular updates to reflect community feedback and evolving needs.

The Town says it will conduct regular reviews with guidance from the Comox Valley Accessibility Committee, Comox Valley Social Planning Society, and input from residents, individuals with lived experience, and accessibility experts.
