BC Ferries says traffic, revenue, net earnings, and expenditures were all up in its latest quarter.
In the first three months, passenger and vehicle traffic increased 74 percent and 42 percent respectively, compared to the same period in the prior year, marking the highest ever first quarter for vehicle traffic.
When compared to the same period in fiscal 2020, pre-COVID, vehicle traffic was up about 4 percent while passenger traffic was up more than 6 percent.
Revenue was up close to $36 million for the three months ending June 30, compared to the same period in the prior year, primarily as a result of higher traffic volumes and net retail sales.
Operating expenses were also up, mainly due to an increased number of sailings, resulting in higher labour costs and fuel consumption, as well as higher fuel prices.
Interim President and CEO Jill Sharland says going forward, BC Ferries' focus remains on ensuring the wellbeing and safety of employees and its customers.
