A local group is set to hold the grand opening of two new homes in Courtenay this weekend to assist the homeless population.
The WeCan Shelter Society aims to build homes for residents of the Comox Valley who are experiencing homelessness.
For approximately $30 thousand, the group says it can build a 20'x8' home for someone that includes a shower, toilet, sink, mini fridge, and built-in bed.
The Society says the homeless population in the Comox Valley has seen over a 200 percent increase in the past three years, based on a BC Housing Research Centre Report.
They focus on providing homes for the unhoused by converting shipping containers/sea cans into safe, modern, and welcoming environments.
The Grand Opening now marks the 10th and 11th home that WeCan has constructed with donations from the community including local construction suppliers, businesses, community groups, private individuals, and volunteers.
WeCan receives no government funding and has already started construction on its 12th home.
Co-founder Charlene Davis says she’s overwhelmed by the outflow of support from the community and is excited to see yet another small home occupied by someone looking to make a new start.
