A strike at Pacific Western Transportation (PWTransit) in Campbell River and Comox has been averted as the union representing transit workers reached a deal with their employer.
Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor Western Regional Director, says transit workers have been successful at bargaining wages and benefits that stay ahead of inflation.
"Congratulations to our members at Local 114 in the Comox Valley for bargaining tough to achieve fairness in a region with a rapidly growing cost of living, “said Lana Payne, Unifor National President.
Transit services in the region will continue uninterrupted this week.
The Local 114 members - in a legal strike position as of last Sunday - were looking for a financial package equivalent to similar-sized transit operations on Vancouver Island and elsewhere in the province.
Negotiations picked up Monday and Tuesday.
Their last contract expired in March with members voting overwhelmingly in favour of job action in a strike vote held in September.
PWTransit is contracted by BC Transit to provide services in Campbell River and Comox Valley and work as transit operators, handy dart operators, mechanics, and cleaners.
More details about the contract will be made available upon ratification.
A vote is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 26, 2023.
