With more tariffs being added to Canadian goods crossing the US border today, the City of Campbell River is sending a letter off to Premier David Eby regarding Bill 7, the Economic Stabilization (Tariff Response) Act.
The letter encourages the provincial government to introduce provisions that will require legislative consultation and approval for significant actions taken under Bill 7, as well as engagement with municipalities and local businesses.
Council acknowledged the need for the province to have mechanisms in place to respond swiftly to economic challenges such as international trade disputes.
However, it also expressed concern that some of the proposed provisions may inadvertently centralize authority and diminish the role of the Legislative Assembly.
The Province introduced the legislation last month to strengthen B.C.’s ability to respond quickly to threats of tariffs imposed on Canada by the United States.
The act will allow cabinet to take different actions, including removing or amending barriers that impede interprovincial trade.
It would also impose tolls/fees on non-Canadian commercial vehicles using provincial highways and, temporarily make changes to cut red tape and regulations.
