Woman Severely Assaulted, Suspect In Custody

Campbell River RCMP have one man in custody after a woman was severely assaulted last week.

On Thursday, August 1st, police responded to a 911 call and found a 44-year-old woman who had been severely assaulted in her home.

She was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

At the scene , police arrested a 24-year-old man in connection to the attack and was held in custody in order to make his first court appearance the next day on August 2nd.

Police say both the victim and the man are known to each other.

The accused, identified as Maitland Campbell, was held in custody and is scheduled to be back in court on Thursday.

He has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault, and forcible confinement.

Campbell River RCMP Major Crime Unit has the file and continues its investigation into the matter. Police say while the case is before the courts, no further details will be released at this time.
